In 2023, the Indonesian government announced plans to relocate all 7,500 residents of Rempang Island to make way for a multibillion-dollar Chinese-funded glass and solar panel factory. Rempang is a small island mostly inhabited by farmers and fishermen. Most are more familiar with its neighbor, Batam Island, an established industrial hub popular with tourists from Singapore and Malaysia.
