Nepal: Snapshots From a Devastated Nation
2015.04.27
Nepal is reeling from a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck April 25 near Lamjung, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Kathmandu. By late Monday, the death toll from the temblor had reached 4,010 people, according to the government of Nepal, with scores more killed in India and Bangladesh. Thousands of others were injured, and authorities in Nepal expected the death toll to climb sharply once rescue teams reached cut-off areas.
The quake, the biggest to hit in Nepal in 81 years, devastated neighborhoods and destroyed some of Nepal’s cultural treasures, such as Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It also unleashed an avalanche on Mount Everest that killed at least 18 people at base camp.
