Another Deadly Tsunami Strikes Indonesia

At least 20 people were killed and 165 were injured in Pandeglang and Serang regencies in Banten province and South Lampung in Lampung province when a tsunami struck around the Sunda Strait Saturday night, Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency said in a statement.

The cause of the tsunami is being investigated by Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics and Geology Agencies. Investigators said it could have been caused by underwater landslides tied to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau or tidal waves linked to a full moon, according to the statement issued by information chief Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

The victim toll could increase as at least two people are missing and dozens of buildings were damaged by the storm, according to the statement.

The Associated Press reported that a survivor posted details about the tsunami on Facebook.

“I had to run, as the wave passed the beach and landed 15-20m (meters) inland,” Øystein Lund Andersen wrote on Facebook. “Next wave entered the hotel area where i was staying and downed cars on the road behind it. Managed to evacuate with my family to higher ground trough forest paths and villages, where we are taken care of (by) the locals. Were unharmed, thankfully.”

An earthquake and tsunami struck Central Sulawesi province on Sept. 28, killing more than 2,000 and injuring more than 10,000.

Investigators called off the search two weeks after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami slammed the region. At the time the search ended, officials reported 680 people were missing and nearly 83,000 were listed as displaced.
